FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHAIRMAN'S PAINFUL CHALLENGE

The report...

7 am on 30th June was pouring with rain (same as every day the previous week) as an intrepid group of around 20 riders set out on their 80 mile journey - were we insane?

The journey eastwards took in the delights of the transpennine trail - Stockport was our first break after around 15 miles of rough riding mostly on the banks of the Mersey river. From Stockport we rode to Broadbottom where our hill climbing skills were tested with a couple of long upward slogs. Hadfield was the next major delight (apparently the local kids main sport is lobbing rocks at passing cyclists).

The final 15 miles was around the Longendale reservoir and up to the Woodhead tunnels where we stopped for lunch. Thankfully the rain abated while we ate sandwiches and changed into drier clothes. The combination of the grit picked up from 4.5 hours in the saddle and the sandwiches was a particular delight. Great thanks go to the volunteers who drove support vehicles to provide comfort to us throughout.

An unexpected consequence of the weather was that braking systems on the bikes were severely challenged & at various points riders lost all braking - an added delight. After a particularly long downhill section (preceded inevitably by a long uphill section!) one of the guys in our group of 4lost brakes and decided I made a softer landing than the river that was at the bottom of the hill. Post collision we compared cuts and manfully carried on.

At 4.30 I returned to Timperley with the first group of riders and apparently looked like I had been sprayed with mud. Catherine made me wash under the hosepipe in the garden before a long shower and a few beers restored feeling to various parts of the body that had suffered throughout the day.

Many thanks to all who donated money to the Christies cause. I raised just over £400 and the group as a whole made £20,000 which is a remarkable total to a very worthwhile cause. Anyone who fancies taking part next year please let me know and start training!
